SEED GERMINATION

The two test tubes shown below were set up and left for a few days at a temperature of 25°C. After a few days the seeds in test tube B had germinated but the seeds in test tube A had not germinated.

Note: You are told that pyrogallic acid solution absorbs oxygen gas and that sodium hydroxide solution absorbs carbon dioxide gas.

1. Do seeds need carbon dioxide gas in order to germinate? Give a reason for your answer, with reference to the results of the experiment.

2. Do seeds need oxygen gas in order to germinate? Give a reason for your answer, with reference to the results of the experiment.

3. Why was tube B necessary in this experiment?

4. What do you think will happen if the seeds from tube A are now placed in tube B? Explain your answer.
