Classifying Materials

We can classify materials into 3 groups:

1. Metals: Examples are iron, copper aluminium. Metals are looked at in more detail in the section 'A Closer Look at Metals".

2. Organic materials: Examples are Plastics, paper and carton (cardboard). Also includes fibres.

3. Ceramics: Examples are glass, porcelain and clay

Activity 3 : Choosing Materials

When choosing a material to do a certain job we need to think about the properties that it needs.

For each of the objects shown in the PDF, name a suitable material and state at least two of its properties that make it suitable for this function.
