HELIUM

Helium atom

What the name means: Helium was named after Helios, the ancient Greek god of the Sun.

Who identified helium?: Two scientists, a Frenchman named Pierre Janssen and an Englishman named Joseph Lockyer, discovered helium in 1869 after their studies of special photographs (called spectrographs) of the Sun.

About helium: Helium is the second most common element in the universe. There is a very small quantity of helium atoms in the Earth’s atmosphere. Helium is one of a group of elements called the noble gases. An atom of helium is stable and so it does not need chemically bond to other atoms.
