The graph below shows how much oxygen a bat respires when the air is at different temperatures. The red line shows a hibernating bat the blue line line shows an active bat.

(a) How much oxygen does the bat respire when the air is at 37°C?

(b) (i) How much oxygen does the hibernating bat respire when the air temperature is 15°C?

(ii) How much does the active bat respire at the same temperature?

(c) The bat respires oxygen to release energy from its food. (i) What do bats feed on?

(ii) What will happen to the bats food when the air temperature becomes colder and colder?

(d) (i) A bat's body temperature during hibernation is usually 4°C. This is often the temperature of underground caves where bats prefer to hibernate in winter. When a bat wakes up from hibernation its body warms up slowly, one degree Celcius every two minutes. How long would it take for a bat to warm up to 37°C so that it could fly?

(ii) If you find a hibernating mammal during winter you must not pick it up or disturb it. This could be fatal for the animal. Can you explain why?
