KREB'S CYCLE

Enzymes located in the inner matrix of mitochondria (in eukaryotes)

Note: Number of mitochondria per cell = activity of the cell. On average 1000 per cell (between 20 and 10 000)

Step 1: Synthesising ACETYL COENZYME A:

Step 2: Oxidising Acetyl CoA:

Oxidising Acetyl CoA

The Kreb's Cycle was discovered by using inhibitors (eg malonate) and isolating enzymes from tissues rich in mitochondria (eg bird flight muscle).
